I'm super excited to be doing my first giveaway in honor of this past Thanksgiving. I wanted to do this giveaway to give thanks for everyone who's been reading my blog. The theme of the giveaway is vintage romance: it includes a vintage brown satin wide-brimmed hat, vintage pearl earrings, a vintage heart brooch, and a hand-made scalloped Peter Pan collar. The collar is hand sewn and decorated with a gold pearl button by myself! It ties together with white ribbon from behind, so it's a perfect way to add a feminine touch to a sweater, top, or dress that needs a little something special. All of the items are vintage treasures that I've found recently, along with my hand-sewn Peter Pan collar. One winner will be receiving all four items to spruce up their Autumn wardrobe!
To enter:

1. Like me on Facebook.
2. Follow me on Twitter, where I will announce the winner.
3. Leave a comment with your name and e-mail (so I can contact you if you win), as well as all the places you are now following me.

The giveaway will be running until December 20!
Good luck guys! Thank you for reading my blog, I appreciate every one of you.

** Also, if you're interested in purchasing a unique, handmade Peter Pan collar, shoot me over an e-mail (jessicawu@jemappellemoi.com) and we can discuss the materials, colors, sizing, buttons, and pricing. I'd love to make one for anyone who's interested.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!
This is one of my favorite holidays because it's centered around love, food, and gatherings. No matter one's ethnicity, age, or gender, everyone has the ability to be thankful and surround themselves with the people they love and cherish. It's on this day that I have to remind myself to not focus so much on materialistic desries (which I know we as fashion bloggers cling to dearly), and remember all the blessings we've been given each day and to be thankful for them.
This year, I want to give thanks for my Mom. She is the most wonderful, loving, caring, and selfless person, who wouldn't hesitate to search heaven and earth for something if she knows it's make us happy. She's always trying to better herself, which amazes me because I already see her as the most efficient multi-tasking, quick-learning, always optimistic super mom. I'm grateful that I can always go to her for anything, whether it be serious issues or silly chats. She'll always listen to me, even if I have to follow her around the house as I yap away, and she never hesitates to give me the advice I need to regain my composure in tough situations. I feel so blessed to be her daughter, and although I give thanks for her every day, I want to especially make it known on this day that I love my mom with all my heart and that she's the one I'm most thankful for.

Prints Galore

Prints Galore
I'm really into floral print trouser pants for fall. It gives a nice blend of granny-meets-lux. I've always been a fan of the granny-chic look, but these floral trousers just take it up a notch. I adore this trend, despite the comments I've received about the granny-like appearance. It's all good, I like looking like a granny (albeit a chic one). Now it's time to find a more wallet-friendly version of these Vanessa Bruno and Jil Sander trousers.

The Golden Hour

Deena & Ozzy black wool hat, Banana Republic navy tank, GAP burgundy skinny cords, BDG cardigan, Report clogs
"Stop! In the name of love..." That was what came to mind when I saw the STOP sign in the road. I'm glad that SoCal still produces beautiful lighting during the golden hour, it's just one hour early during Autumn. The burgundy/maroon color is my favorite color for Autumn and Winter, it offers a nice amount of color while keeping it toned down and easy to style for the colder climate.
This is currently my favorite hat! I've been lusting after a black wide-brimmed hat for a while now, and I found the perfect Deena & Ozzy one at Urban Outfitters during their Veteran's Day sale. Obviously I haven't really been abiding my by self-imposed 'no shopping until Black Friday' ban, but ehhh with such good deals what are you going to do? Fashion is my guilty pleasure...
Check out my blog later this week for the official Giving Thanks giveaway!

Simplicity

Simplicity

(Les Prairies de Paris knit sweater, $305; Chaser scoop neck shirt, £30; Carolina Herrera scoop neck tank, £191; D&G skinny leather pants, $932; ALDO leopard wedge, $129; Fiona Paxton statement necklace, $350; Zara Simon cross ring, £96; LE VERNIS Nail Colour – Pirate - CHANEL - What's New - CHANEL - Luxury..., £18)
If I had to wear this combo every day, I would feel damn confident. Black, grey, red, and gold with leopard print is probably one of the best combinations in existence. And how hot is Tao Okamoto with red lips and a Coke? Tao Okamoto, Alexa Chung, and Sarah of clothesencounters are some sexy ladies that make me contemplate cutting my hair into an edgy blunt bob...
In other news, I'm going to be holding a 'Giving Thanks' giveaway on my blog to give thanks for all the people who have been reading my blog! Check back next week for the full details.

Splurge or Steal?

High End vs. Low End
Would you splurge or steal? Even though leopard print is a definite trend, I think that it's also a classic to have in your wardrobe. Leopard boots are a great way to add some spice to a simpler outfit, such as a white blouse and black skinny jeans. For these outfits, I opted to play up some current trends: leather, leopard, and cross jewelry. I paired leather shorts and a tan slouchy sweater with leopard boots and sacrilegious cross jewelry. Now my question is, would you rather splurge or steal? I believe that if you're dying to try out a new trend, go for a cheaper steal first to indulge in the trend, then see if it'll become a classic to later invest in.

The biggest plus of a cancelled class is getting to have brunch with my mom. Long Beach has tons of delicious eateries, but we chose to give the Coffee Cup Cafe a second visit after initially noticing a picture of a drool-worthy veggie scramble on That's Chic.
Speaking of That's Chic, I received the Qing Hua Diana F+ Lomography camera a couple weeks ago and I'm dying to go get some film so I can try it out! Thank you again to Rachel and Lomography for gifting me my first film camera!!
I'm contemplating doing a 'haul' video about all my recent 'holiday' buys during the Columbus and Veteran's Day sales. What do you think?

The Realm of Media that is Our World

image013
img_courses
The realm of social mass media that we live in is quite astounding. We as citizens of our society are subject to mass marketing and advertising at various points throughout our day, and often times we are completely unaware of it. We constantly engage in several different kinds of media and technological communications, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Blogger, or Google. The mediums of media that we engage in range from computers and televisions to iPhones and other handheld communication devices. Convenience is the key for modern-day technological innovations. Advertisements appear on television, websites, radio, cell phones, video games, and billboards to ensure widespread visibility.
Along with the advancements in technology, the ways in which advertisements reach consumers have also advanced. Advertisements used to mainly flow through television commercials, radio ads, and publication advertisements. However, with the recent growth in the influence of websites and online blogs, companies have been reaching out to bloggers as a channel for advertisements. It's genius really. Companies give products to bloggers, who are influential figures in the fashion blogosphere, and ask them to review them on their blog. Sometimes, the company even teams up with the blogger to do a giveaway for their readers, which benefits the company, the blogger, and the readers. The company gets advertised for a relatively low price (the cost of a couple products is cheap compared to the thousands of dollars that it costs to run widespread television advertisements), the blogger receives high traffic and a great product, and the readers get a chance to win the free products.
While not every fashion blogger receives these sorts of opportunities from individual companies, Google offers each blogger the opportunity to use AdSense to advertise on their blog and receive a portion of the profits based on the number of clicks they receive. Advertisements have permeated every level of communication that we engage in, maximizing the public into the ideal consumers.
I have always relished the convenience and efficiency of how our society utilizes technology, particularly since the birth of the computer was not too long ago. The importance of technology and instant communication in our daily lives has been brought to my heightened attention since I began taking courses in Introduction to Mass Media, Comparative World Literature- Reading the World, and Human Development in college. As a result, I have been prompted to delving deeper into my view of the world, reality, and the overall effects on media onto people.
As a blogger, I am very grateful to the use of technology to instantly link me to people who share my interests. My blog has allowed me to express my views and opinions in a community that shares my love for fashion and unique presentation of self. For me, fashion is more than combining clothing and accessories into an outfit, it's about the external presentation of the self that is a direct reflection of who you are inside and what you believe in and deem to be important.
I applaud the advertisement industry, particularly how adept and skillful they are at selling products to consumers, and the pace at which we gobble it all up.
I'm extremely keen on locating and reading the book pictured above: Uncovering Fashion- Fashion Communications Across the Media by Marian Frances Wolbers.

Tea Rose Garden

A lovely mom and daughter day spent at the Tea Rose Garden in Pasadena. It's an adorably quaint little place that serves a variety of teas, pastries, scones, and finger sandwiches. The interior of the cafe was very whimsical and organic (even all the tea sets were different), it brings out the dainty, polished lady in everyone. We got the Tea Rose Afternoon Tea, which allowed us to choose our sandwiches and pastries. For the sandwiches, we got the chicken almond, goat cheese & sun-dried tomato, and cranberry chicken, which were all absolutely divine– the goat cheese & sun-dried tomato was oh-so yummy. For the tea time bites, we chose the creme brulee cheesecake, espresso brownie, and lemon bar. They came in petite sizes, which resulted in a natural elegant pinkie extension– I felt so poised. We went for a more fruity taste and chose the lemon raspberry scone. I was a touch skeptical about choosing a fruity or floral tea because I tried berry herbal tea once and it tasted like I drank a flower. However, upon the waitress's suggestion, we went with a passionfruit black tea.... It was so delicious! Add in a couple adorable sugar cubes and a splash of milk and my tea experience became heavenly. Our order also came with spring petal salad, with real flower petals in it (I wasn't sure if I was supposed to eat it... but I did anyway), rose sugar cookies, and fresh fruit. Along with delicious tea-time favorites, they also sell fresh flowers, cards, and unique tea sets.
I had such a fun time with my mom; we bonded and chatted over a delectable selection of tea time delicacies, then wrapped up our little date with shopping in Old Town Pasadena. It's a perfect place to take your moms for Mother's Day.
